Exciting Changes to Owen Hall

Owen Hall

Exciting changes are happening at Owen Hall. Beginning fall 2019, Owen Hall will become single-room housing only and will offer extended housing contract terms for students who need to move to campus a bit earlier than traditional move-in dates.

The extended term begins two weeks before the traditional residence hall move-in date, includes winter break, and ends one week after the traditional residence hall move-out date. For the 2019-20 academic year, the contract runs from Aug. 10, 2019, until May 9, 2020.

Owen will also become a board-optional hall. Those living in Owen Hall have the option of purchasing an unlimited dining plan (DineOn Silver, Gold or Platinum) or an off-campus dining plan, available in bundles of 10 meals. If students prefer, they can also choose to forgo purchasing a plan. Students continue to have access to Sparty’s at Riverwalk Market as well as a new all-you-care-to-eat dining hall on campus.

Thrive at Riverwalk Market at Owen will be certified free from the top eight food allergens (milk, eggs, soy, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish) as well as sesame and gluten. The location will be certified by Kitchens With Confidence, a third-party accreditor that will regularly examine protocols and policies to verify the location as being free of the allergens listed. Certification includes reviewing the path of food from delivery at the dock to storage areas, food preparation areas, and serving. Grab-and-go packaged items from Sparty’s are excluded.

The name Thrive was born from the concept that parents of students with allergies frequently voice the desire to see their Spartan thrive, not just survive, when they are dining on campus.

The three venues in Thrive at Riverwalk Market will serve a wide range of options such as flavored chicken strips with accompanying sauce options, smoked and rotisserie meats, chipotle lime pork tostados, grain bowls, vegan “crab” cakes, risotto bowls, and allergen-free mac and cheese.

The Sparty’s retail area inside Owen Hall will remain separate from the all-you-care-to-eat concept, maintaining a majority of their regular selections. To accommodate those with food allergies who will dine at Thrive, the Culinary Services team is also considering unique product options for the Sparty’s location at Owen Hall.

In addition to the changes to dining, Owen Hall will continue to offer convenient amenities including weekly housekeeping, a community kitchen, study lounges, and utilities like laundry and Wi-Fi. Parking is also available for all residents of Owen Hall and is currently located directly across the street.

Room and board rates for 2019-20 are expected to be approved by the MSU Board of Trustees in April 2019. RHS anticipates the rates for Owen Hall to be similar to the current Williams Hall rate structure with additional fees for extended contracts.
