Within Michigan State University’s Division of Residential and Hospitality Services (RHS), Spartan Linen Services (SLS) operates as a full-service commercial laundry, linen and uniform hub on campus. As an extension of Culinary Services (CS), SLS has been serving MSU since 1929. Nearly a century later, it has grown into a comprehensive operation supporting internal departments and the broader Spartan community — though many on campus may not realize the full scope of its offerings.
“Something people may not know about Spartan Linen is that we offer rental linens to all employees at department-level prices,” says Daniel Knapp, production and operations manager. “For folks who need tablecloths, napkins or other linens for retirement parties, birthdays, banquets or all of the above, Spartan Linen has it covered.”
The operation’s catalog extends far beyond tablecloths. SLS offers table and bed linen rentals, laundry and uniform cleaning, custom embroidery, screen printing, and a retail line of customizable name-brand apparel. Featured brands include Carhartt, Nike, Columbia, The North Face, Eddie Bauer, Levi’s, Wrangler and Dockers.
Knapp notes embroidery services are available not only to university departments but also to students, staff and community members looking to personalize their own items. “We want to personalize your jackets, monogram your blankets and detail your personal items.”
During graduation season, students can stop by SLS to add a personal touch to their regalia. “Spartans can have their name, degree, college and whatever else they desire on their graduation stole to show their accomplishments and what is important to them,” Knapp says.
Environmental responsibility is also a core focus of daily operations. The facility features state-of-the-art water reclamation systems – advanced wastewater processing and finishing equipment designed to deliver high-quality results while reducing environmental impact. More than 10 recycling stations throughout the facility sort plastics, cardboard and used uniforms. As Knapp says, “At Spartan Linen, we really care about delivering high-quality cleaning with low levels of environmental impact.”
Streamlined processes and modern equipment allow the facility to serve a wide range of clients, from campus dining halls and athletics programs to community members seeking custom apparel.

For those looking to show their Spartan pride in a more playful way, SLS currently offers a line of apparel celebrating one of MSU’s most beloved unofficial mascots: the campus squirrels. Shirts, crewnecks and hoodies are available in a variety of designs. Knapp highlights a timely option for the season: “For those who are graduating or know a graduate, come check out our graduating squirrel design featuring the beautiful cherry blossom trees now blooming.”
Additional information on services, rentals and merchandise is available at spartanlinen.rhs.msu.edu or by calling 517-355-8520. SLS is also open for in-person visits Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 373 Service Road, East Lansing, MI 48823.
