Teams from East Neighborhood Win Culinary Cup and Bake Off Competitions

Published On: June 26, 2017

On Wednesday, June 7, Culinary Services (CS) hosted and annual Culinary Cup and Bake Off competitions at The Vista at Shaw. Established in 2001, the Culinary Cup is a “Chopped” style challenge where teams of two must incorporate mystery ingredients into a dish that’s prepared and plated under a time constraint. Fourteen teams competed this year, working with specialty ingredients such as farro, red lentils and butternut squash.

The first round consisted of three flights of teams, and each group was tasked with preparing an appetizer dish. The winner from each flight went on to the final round, where they collaborated to create an entrée. After teams from The Vista at Shaw, South Pointe at Case and The Edge at Akers faced off in the finals, Lisa Cox and Dewayne Washington from Akers were named the winners of the 2017 Culinary Cup! Their entrée featured trout crusted with buttermilk and cornmeal accompanied by a colorful salad and grilled butter focaccia bread.

Culinary Cups judges included Director of CS Guy Procopio, Senior Human Resources Management and Budget Analyst for MSU Human Resources Jeff Brodie, and MSU Assistant Dean for Student Success Initiatives and Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative Director and Founding Dean for the School of Hospitality Management and the Culinary Arts at Monroe College in New York Dr. Luke David Schultheis.

During the event, seven teams also submitted a savory bread creation for the Bake Off. The winning team, Jenifer Rodriguez and Cory Olivo from Akers Hall, made a Monte Cristo monkey bread served with two varieties of raspberry sauce.

Throughout the event, attendees from across the division had an opportunity to network, support competitors, and enjoy lunch from Union Deli as well as breads submitted for the Bake Off. Congratulations to all of the 2017 teams and organizers of the event on a job well done!
