Another Homecoming weekend at MSU has come and gone. The Division of RHS celebrated a first place win as their Homecoming float won “Best Campus Department” in this year’s parade.
The Division of RHS takes an active part in the Homecoming festivities by building a departmental float each year. “We always try to keep the RHS Homecoming float fun, light-hearted and family-friendly,” said Natisha Foster, Assistant Director for Coordination and Planning for Residence Education and Housing Services. “This year’s float took about two weeks to build, and we invited team members from across the division to come up with ideas that celebrated this year’s Homecoming theme.”
According to Foster, the team came up with the phrase “Spartans Rising Above,” and the float-building committee created colorful moving balloons on teeter totters, each of which represented one of the Big 10 schools.
Foster and Associate Director of Facilities Tom Welburn served as the project managers for the RHS Homecoming float building process.
“Unlike in previous years, our float-building team split up into two teams: the construction team and decorating team,” Foster described. “The construction team did most of the building and heavy lifting, and the decorating team painted and added the finishing touches to the float.”
The 2018 Homecoming float awards were announced at halftime during the MSU Homecoming football game against Northwestern. Foster accepted the award on the field, along with Jordan Luna, a team member from RHS Facilities.
“We are so excited to win the ‘Best Campus Department’ award,” Foster stated. “Being able to participate in the float building process is one of the best parts of my job, and we’ve already started thinking about ideas for next year’s float!”
This year’s parade featured more than 130 entries, including the Spartan Marching Band, the MSU alumni band, a collection of student organizations, MSU athletic and dance teams, MSU colleges and departments, the 2018 Homecoming Court, and much more.
