Grandparents University Comes to MSU

MSU’s Grandparents University hosted MSU alumni grandparents looking to enjoy campus with their grandchildren. The three-day event gave MSU grandparents the opportunity to spend time with their grandchildren as they all participated in classes and activities. The event also gave grandchildren the chance to discover some of what MSU has to offer.

“I think Grandparents University gives our grandchild the idea that being away from home is not something to be feared,” said Jeff Black, a grandfather at the event. “MSU is a nurturing environment and I think that she’ll have a good time out here.”

Grandparents and grandchildren can participate in a wide range of programs as part of the annual conference, including physical activities like bike riding, putt-putt golf or swimming; educational classes on a wide range of topics or more leisurely activities like board games or movie nights. Grandparents University also gives alumni the chance to promote MSU as a future college destination.

“Our parents went to Michigan State and so did our grandparents so it’s sort of like a generational thing,” said Megan Singer, a grandchild at the event.

Furthermore, returning alumni are able to reconnect to the campus they once called home.

“This is a cool program for the grandparents as much as the kids,” said grandparent Joe Singer. ”You get to spend time with your grandchildren, you get to reminisce looking around at the old buildings and the places that you used to live; it’s a fun couple of days.”
