Case Hall - South Neighborhood

Case Renovations

The renovations planned for Case Hall include a new dining facility as well as updates to resident rooms and corridors. The dining hall will receive similar venue-style stations as The Gallery at Snyder/Phillips and Brody Square.

Case Hall will be under construction from May 2011 to January 2012. The residential areas in Case Hall will open to students in the fall of 2011, while the dining hall will not open until January 2012.

South Pointe at Case Hall is now open to the public! The new dining hall features five venues – Bliss, for desserts and treats; Great Lakes Plate, for Michigan-grown entrées; Ciao!, for Italian-style cuisine; Brimstone Grille, for items hot off the grill; and S2, for salad and sushi. Upon entering the dining hall from either the north or south entrance, students are immediately immersed in the modern, yet homey atmosphere. The modernity of the new venues contrasts with the exposed-wooden ceilings, rustic light fixtures and intimate seating to create an exciting dining experience for students, faculty, staff and guests.

The ample seating space, which includes some raised seating areas, is decorated with large light fixtures. There are varying types of seating, including booths and small and large tables. The seating space near the north entrance features long gathering tables on a platform with large wooden light fixtures overhead. Also near the north entrance is seating space that can be sealed off if necessary. The space can be sealed off by glass doors on tracks. One wall in particular can be sealed off by a sliding glass door on tracks that is hidden by an old wooden door which was once used in West Circle. Natural lighting fills South Pointe’s expansive seating area with the western-most wall made entirely of windows.

The renovation at Case Hall also includes the construction of a new Sparty’s Café in North Case Hall. The new Sparty’s Café is now open and features high-top seating. It is located outside the north entrance of South Pointe.

Renovation to the new South Pointe at Case dining hall is progressing steadily. Seating is now being installed. Workers are pouring concrete on ramps leading to elevated seating areas to ensure no cracks in the flooring. Various food stations are in place, and workers are connecting stoves and ovens to gas lines. Decorative bases around food stations are made from sustainable wood products. Work is also continuing on the dining hall's entrance. In the kitchen, workers are busy installing new food service equipment while cleaning existing appliances.

At the new Sparty's Café, refrigerators have been installed along one wall. Masonry work to exterior and interior walls is also complete, and workers are continuing renovations.

At Case Hall workers continue to work on the dining hall, with the particular focus on the addition area where seating will be located. Metal framing is being installed throughout and an above-head exhaustion hood is now in place in what will be the food stations area. Outside, sidewalk along the back of South Case and nearest to the dining hall addition has been poured and completed. Workers are also busy adding roofing to the addition. With the exception of adding windows, workers are almost finished with the exterior construction of the Sparty’s Café off of the North Case lobby. The sidewalks leading to the north lobby have also been completed.

South Case’s lobby and reception desk received upgrades, with new paint and flooring throughout and a finished border along the reception desk in place. Newly constructed walls isolate the dining hall from the lobby in order to prevent hazard from when students arrive until the dining hall’s projected completion in January 2012. The addition to the dining hall now features an exposed natural-wood beam ceiling.

In the resident wings, workers have installed new carpeting in the hallways and elevator lobbies of every floor. The third-floor apartment, in which workers demolished three separate office spaces to construct it, is now finished and is awaiting furniture. Elsewhere, workers are adding finishing touches to the newly painted lower-level media room, which is furnished with couches and chairs and will have a flat-screen television and pool table. Workers are also installing HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) units in the lower-level. These units, which will provide temperature control throughout the hall, are installed piece-by-piece due to their size.

Before workers pour concrete for the sidewalk outside of South Case’s entrance, they are placing pipes along the already-installed framing. The pipes use warm fluids in the snow melt system for heating sidewalks to ensure safe travel in winter months.

Renovation in Case Hall continues with workers prepping for the installation of new HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) units. Workers are finishing up masonry within the planned Sparty’s location, and an exterior concrete border is in place, outlining the addition to the dining hall. Additionally, the resident wing upgrades progress and are about 90 percent completed.

Workers have finished the fire suppression system throughout the majority of resident wings at Case Hall and are now painting the exposed ceiling and pipes to make the new features more attractive. The resident wing facelift progresses elsewhere with newly painted walls and continuing installation of new shower bases throughout resident bathrooms.

On the third floor, an apartment is being constructed. Much of the framework for its foundation is complete. In the dining hall, workers have mapped out the location of dining stations and progress continues on the groundwork for the planned addition as well as the new Sparty’s off of the north lobby.

Framing for the upgrades to South Case’s reception desk and lobby are now up. In addition, the Case dining hall entrance through to the kitchen area is now framed. All metal beams throughout the dining hall have been sprayed with fireproofing chemicals that will keep them from failing structurally in the event of overheating. The chemicals give the beams a white, powdery appearance.

With the atrium down, construction on the exterior addition to the dining hall, which will allow more seating for patrons, is progressing with the concrete foundation poured, extending beyond the width of the original atrium, and all underground preparation nearly complete. Finally, work on the fire suppression piping and alarm systems as well as the facelifts to the student corridors and resident private bathrooms continues.

Demolition is well under way at Case Hall with the destruction of brick walls throughout the dining hall interior and the removal of windows and metal structure in the Case atrium. Throughout resident corridors old carpeting is being removed and work has begun on the replacement of old bathroom fixtures with new.

In addition, the building’s sprinkler system is being reconfigured and due to the existing ceiling structure at Case will now consist of exposed pipe which will eventually be painted to match the new hallways. Finally, two very special birch trees on either side of the atrium have been protected to avoid damage during the construction process.
